Free Write 09/13/21

My biggest weakness for this draft is making sure the overall flow of my essay is smooth. Often I feel like my sentences get too wordy or choppy that it messes up the effectiveness of my argument. Another weakness I feel I have when writing this draft is making sure my second paragraph supports my overall thesis statement. I feel like the intention is there but the overall execution of the paragraph doesn’t support my thesis statement. However, for the most part, my essay does build a connection between The Yellow Wallpaper and Freud’s perspective on doctors. Furthermore, my essay does also build a connection between Beuer’s different perspective on hysteria and between The Yellow Wallpaper and Freud’s speech. However, the most worrying issue I’m facing is the effectiveness of my second body paragraph, my initial plan seem to be very effective but the overall result left me with a bit of worry. I feel the second body paragraph can be a bit better and that is maybe off-topic however, I’m not sure what parts I should add or take out or if I should just completely write a new body paragraph.

Overall, after having a week to reflect on my Summary and Response essay some conclusions I came to was that starting your paper early can be a huge positive because it gave me much more time to do peer review and edit more work to its best potential. Another conclusion I came to was my paragraphs need to start becoming less wordy, and more straightforward but still effective. I often sidetrack my argument due to the wordiness of my paragraphs, which in the long run isn’t helpful and makes my essay less effective. The conclusion I made was that I need to not forget to explain my quotes in a way that doesn’t just summarize the story but instead has my twist to it.

The reason why I chose the country doctor as my story for the essay is that the story showed parallels between the doctor’s moral code and his true feelings which made it more interesting to analyze especially using Freud’s ideas. Furthermore, the country doctor was a complex but eventually captivating short story. In a much more obvious sense, the story made it easier to analyze through a Freudian lens due to the personal battle the doctor finds himself in throughout the story.

The biggest annoyance in my sources is finding a clear quote to use because, in The Country Doctor, many of the phrases are complex to understand and have double meanings in the overall context. Furthermore, another annoyance of incorporating sources in my writing is often not explaining them in my own words, and just summarizing the quote or even worse, not explaining or summarizing the quote, leaving the quote a “hit and run” quote.

Free write 11/10/21

The stylistic choice of structure is used by Baldwin in “Sonny’s Blues.” For example, the story starts in the present time, however, in the middle of the story, it changes to a flashback until the end of the story which jumps back to the present time. This makes his stylistic choice different from other writers because usually, writers don’t let a flashback take over half of the story, but in this case, Baldwin uses the flashback to explain the current situation that is occurring in the present time. 

Free write 11/15/2021 (thesis workshop)

The best part about my chosen story is the fact it is told from a first-person perspective. The reason why this is the best part of my chosen story is that it allows the readers to see Sonny’s growth firsthand. Furthermore, this also symbolizes an outsider’s perspective watching an individual grow out of hardships. This supports the author’s critique of society that society needs a form of expression and support to overcome life’s hardships.
